Mother's Day for Seniors | Frontline GCMWe have waited all year and finally Mother’s Day is almost here, that day each year when we honor the women who made our lives possible; even though we should each of the other days also.

For many of us, Mother’s Day is an occasion that leaves us scrambling around looking for the perfect gift not knowing the right thing to give the mothers in our lives, especially those who are older. We search for something our senior mothers and grandmothers will use and also bring enjoyment to their lives.  Here are a few gift ideas and tips that may make things a little easier for you this year. Parkinsons Disease | Frontline GCMParkinson’s Disease is typically diagnosed in people between the ages of 50-60. Even though the disease normally hits prior to senior age, there are many resources available that can be helpful for seniors dealing with Parkinson’s.

How to Survive Allergy Season

Allergy Symptoms | Frontline GCMThis year’s unusually warm winter, has awakened allergy season early this year.  Millions of Americans are experiencing stuffy noses and watery eyes; however, pollen and allergy symptoms can be especially difficult to deal with for seniors.  Here are a few ways that caregivers can help seniors survive allergy season.

Look for the Signs
Allergies don’t discriminate between the young and the old. The elderly are just as likely as anyone else to be affected when spring blooms begin to appear. Caregivers should be on the lookout for the traditional signs of allergies: sneezing, a runny nose, and itchy eyes.

Keep Your Doctor Informed
It can be difficult for a doctor to diagnose allergies in an older person for several reasons.  They may be focused on a senior’s larger health issues, elderly people often have multiple chronic health problems, and it can be hard for a doctor to separate a potential allergy from an ongoing disease.  A caregiver who suspects that their elderly loved one may have allergies should bring their concerns to their loved one’s doctor.

Caregiver Relaxing | Frontline GCMSince you have become a caregiver, have you looked in the mirror and said to yourself, I have changed?  Due to the stress of caregiving; we don’t get a chance to sleep, we sometimes lose contact with friends and a family, let’s face it sometimes we just look plain awful.  The worst part is that when we do get a chance to get away, all we do is worry.

What do Caregivers Worry About?

  • My father accuses me of being controlling and demanding.
  • We fight all the time because my mother feels like I am ordering her around.
  • My parents cannot take their medications on their own, they never know the days, they forget to pay bills and they have let themselves go.
  • My mother never gets out and watches TV all day and I fear she will only get worse if she doesn’t do anything to help herself. Continue Reading…
